The concept of the exhibition space, designed for a steeply sloping site, is based on the specific characteristics of the location. A significant part of the building’s volume is situated below ground level, allowing it to maintain a subtle presence on the surface and almost blend into its surroundings. An important aspect of the design was the relationship between the exterior and interior worlds, as well as their deliberate separation. While the surface establishes a connection with the surrounding landscape and natural environment, the underground exhibition spaces provide a more immersive and independent spatial experience, partially isolated from the outside world. Two light wells located on the lower level bring natural light into the exhibition spaces while simultaneously creating a visual connection between the surface and the interior. When viewed without the surrounding earth cover, the building can also be perceived as an independent, sculptural volume.
