Starting the first part of the two terms spanning course is to practice the design of a public building in a comprehensive way on a real location. The design process begins with multi-layered research, including a comprehensive survey of the site, the collection and analysis of innovative ideas and references. Throughout the term, consultations also involve other disciplines (Structural Engineering, Building details, Construction Technology, Mechanical Engineering and Environmental Engineering), enabling students to understand their requirements and the implications these have for the planned facility’s location, function, operation and appearance.The design is to develop project both in drawings at a scale of 1:100 and written specification documents with the assistance of the consultants. The briefing, masterplanning, and modelling are parts of the task.
The Comprehensive ('complex') Design course is the second interactive architectural project within the Sustainable Architecture Specialisation. Its aim is to explore and practise the process of creating sustainable facilities for communities through research, extensive brainstorming and consultation support over the course of a full term. The Department of Public Building Design traditionally focuses on the research and design of community living spaces. Within this framework, the Innovative Architecture Studio places particular emphasis on the analysis and development of functions, from the macro level down to the details, whilst paying close attention to integration into the environment and the resulting impacts.
Location of design tasks is Budapest, XXII district - Budafok city centre.
Budafok is a historic suburb of Budapest, capital of Hungary. It is situated in the southwestern part of Buda, next to the Danube. Budafok was an independent settlement before 1950. The village was known for its wine and 'champagne' production.
Today it has a typical suburban life with massive commuter traffic to the capital centre which places a heavy burden on the local city centre. The local municipality is going to take innovative architectural interventions to create a liveable and loveable core in the city with loads of green - in such a way that it conceals the inevitable motor traffic in a civilised manner.
Design task is to assess the current situation of the city centre and to create sustainable, innovative architectural answers on the discovered issues.
The facility to design can be a new one or adaptive reuse for different kinds of public functions - as cultural, social, sport, educational, rehabilitation, etc. Major integrated part of facility has to be the solution of parking the cars of local commuters.
Perfect design starts with a good briefing in order to get a really sustainable building at the end.
