The distinction between architects and the general public is becoming increasingly apparent: while the profession is driven by a desire for innovation, the general public often prioritizes adherence to tradition. This very contrast—the relationship between past and present—served as the inspiration for my thesis. In my research, I analyzed the works of Níall McLaughlin Architects, where this tension is transformed into a unifying element. I examined five buildings in Oxford and Cambridge, each differing in function and scale, and identified a recurring design toolkit that offers deeper insight into their architectural approach. This toolkit comprises four enduring design principles: environmental patterns, layering (both stratification and texture), rhythm, and the role of natural light. I concluded my study with an interview conducted at the Níall McLaughlin Architects office in London.
